What Is Heart In Boxing?

Watch the video above to give your eyes a break and your ears a treat.

In the context of boxing ‘heart’ is more about mentality than the body. Although the physical conditioning of boxers is vital, it is a determination, conviction and drive to perform that fans and commentators mean when discussing the ‘heart’ of a particular fighter. It is most often said about a fighter who has taken a lot of damage, and does not give up, or when a boxer gets up from knockdowns when they would lose no respect by not doing so. So the word is used in a similar way to courage, bravery, tenacity and resilience.

The physical aspect of the heart in boxing, as with most sport, is something that is affected by all aspects of a boxer’s life and training. Cardio is part of boxing training, and as most boxers are physically fit, especially when training for a fight, the heart muscle will affect all boxers abilities in the ring. So the combination of a strong physical heart, and a strong will and determination to give everything and put their body on the line is the ‘heart’ required to compete at the highest levels of boxing.
